$80,000 Scratch-it winner

May 12, 2020 – Salem, Ore. – The are a multitude of ways to play Oregon Lottery Scratch-its. Some people scratch to see the prizes first, some go line by line. Others simply scratch the barcode and scan the tickets to find out they won. Then you have Harry Goodier of Springfield.

Goodier’s system for playing Scratch-its paid off this week — scratching the game part of the ticket first, then revealing his prize.

“I like to not see the prizes until I’m done,” Goodier said. “I saw I had a winner, went back, and when it said $80,000 I couldn’t believe it.”

Goodier won $80,000, the top prize, on the $10 Bonus Slots Scratch-it. As of Tuesday, May 12, one top prize remained on the popular Scratch-it. Goodier purchased his ticket the Chevron on 42nd Street in Springfield when he stopped for an energy drink.

“As I was checking out, that Scratch-it called my name,” Goodier laughed. “After I scratched it, I checked it on the mobile app, and when I got the balloons and ‘Congratulations Harry!’ I knew it was real.”

To protect the health and safety of its employees and the public, the Oregon Lottery has temporarily closed the Salem and Wilsonville Lottery offices. Officials with the Lottery continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation closely. If players have a winning ticket, they can fill out a claim form on the Oregon Lottery website, https://oregonlottery.org/about/claim-prizes , and then mail in the signed ticket and claim form.

Players who have winning tickets of $50,000 or more, will need to make an appointment to come to the Oregon Lottery office in Salem. Call 503-540-1000 for assistance. As always, players should be certain to sign the back of their tickets.

Goodier was one of several Scratch-it winners who visited the Oregon Lottery this week. With the shuttering of Video Lottery terminals across the state due to public health concerns, Lottery officials say that Scratch-it sales last week were double what they were a year ago.

$50,000 Scratch-it winner

April 17, 2020 – Salem, Ore. – The boredom of being cooped up in her Medford home during the recent stay-at-home guidelines, turned into an excellent week after Maria Salas visited her local Minute Mart.

And thanks to that visit, Salas’ boredom soon became excitement as she came home with a Scratch-it worth $50,000.

“We normally play Video Lottery, and when we went to the market we saw the Scratch-its and decided to play,” she said. “The first ticket we played was the winner. I was in shock – I am still in shock.”

Instead of coming home with snacks, Salas Laris said she came home with the down payment for some property.

“I haven’t been able to sleep, I’m so excited,” she said. “I have a down payment now, it’s great.”

Salas Laris turned the $5 Lucky Lemons Scratch-it she purchased at the Minute Mart in Medford, into $50,000, that’s a lot of lemonade! She then contacted the Oregon Lottery to claim her prize.

$6.3 million Megabucks winner

March 27, 2020 – Salem, Ore. Robert (Bob) McCauley of Mt. Vernon is the Oregon Lottery’s newest Megabucks jackpot winner. McCauley matched all six of his numbers – on a free Megabucks ticket he’d won from a previous drawing – and won the $6.3 million jackpot for the Monday, Mar. 23 Megabucks drawing.

“I decided to go to the Post Office,” said McCauley. “It’s only a couple of blocks away.” Luckily for him, as he passed the Blue Mountain Mini Mart on his way to the Post Office, he thought he’d check his Megabucks ticket from the last drawing and get a new ticket for the next drawing.

Practicing good social distancing, McCauley went to the Mini Mart’s drive-up window to make his Lottery purchase. Working at the store was Mini Mart Manager Jolene Moulton. “I checked Bob’s ticket and actually gave him the voucher slip that came with his free ticket,” said Jolene. “As he was walking away, I saw the free play ticket sitting on the counter and realized Bob had the wrong ticket. I called him back to the window gave him the free ticket.”

The next day, McCauley had a knock on his door at home. “It was Bill, from the city,” said McCauley. “I answered the door and Bill says, ‘Bob. You need to check your ticket because Jolene thinks you may have won the lottery.’” Knowing the winning jackpot ticket had been sold in Mt. Vernon, population 512, and knowing she’d sold only three Megabucks tickets at the Mini Mart for Monday’s Megabucks drawing, Jolene dispatched Bill to McCauley’s house.

McCauley asked his daughter, Pam, to check the winning numbers online. They soon learned that Jolene’s hunch was true “Pam was screaming and jumping up and down,” said McCauley. “I was cool as a cucumber.”

After calling the Lottery to make an appointment, Bob arrived in Salem Thursday, Mar. 26 with a small group of family and friends to claim his prize. Asked what he was going to buy first, he said his wife wanted a new refrigerator. And after the fridge, Bob will get a new truck.

McCauley chose to take the bulk-sum option, which splits the prize in half, and after taxes, he took home $2.14 million.

$1 million raffle winner

March 20, 2020 – Salem, Ore. – After Ann Charkowicz and her husband Brian saved a toddler from being hit by a car, she had a “good feeling” and purchased an Oregon Lottery Raffle ticket that won her $1 million.
The Coos Bay couple, who have been married for 36 years, were getting ready for a vacation to hunt for agates when they noticed a toddler walking into a busy street. They got the child home safely, and after the vacation Ann decided to purchase the tickets.
“I figured I did something good, something good might happen to me,” Ann said.
Ann purchased the winning $1 million jackpot ticket at the Safeway where she works in Coos Bay, on Johnson Avenue. Ann has worked for the company for 34 years.
Earlier this week, when the Raffle winning numbers were announced, she printed the numbers to post them for customers. When she looked at the printout, the winning number looked familiar. When she checked her ticket, she couldn’t believe it.
“The first thing I said to Brian was, ‘How much do we need for me to retire?'” she said. “I had a feeling I was going to win, and it came true. It was karma.”
The couple took home $680,000 after taxes and said they were going to save the money until things stabilize with the economy. She did say she may try to reduce her hours at work.
“It is crazy right now,” Brian said. “We are being extremely careful with this money.”
Officials with Safeway said currently their staff is so busy keeping up with shopping demand, that it was great to hear some good news.
“We are so thrilled for Ann!” said Jill McGinnis, director of communications and public affairs for Safeway. “Our employees work so hard, now more than ever. I can’t think of a better time for her to win. I hope that she feels a great sense of security because of this — and has some fun too!”
The winning number was 080948. There are a total of 1801 winning tickets, with one $1 million prize, 300 prizes of $500 and 1,500 prizes of $100. For a complete list of winning numbers visit the Oregon Lottery’s Raffle website at oregonlottery.org/raffle.

$1 million Mega Millions winner

March 9, 2020 – Salem, Ore. – A Tualatin Air Force veteran had the shock of his life when he realized he won $1 million playing Mega Millions.

James Robbins of Tualatin purchased his $2 Mega Millions ticket at his local Fred Meyer, with one set of numbers, for the Feb. 21 drawing. A few days later he took the ticket to the customer service desk, where the clerk told him he’d have to claim his prize at an Oregon Lottery payment center because he’d won more than $600. Last Friday, he visited the Oregon Lottery’s Wilsonville Payment Center, where he learned he had matched 5 numbers but missed the Mega Ball – meaning he won $1 million.

“I was so shocked I started shaking and the staff asked me if I wanted some water,” he said. “They also had me sign the back of the ticket and told me that I had to go to Salem to get the prize. I kept saying ‘Are you serious?’”

Since Robbins was so excited, he opted to get a friend to drive him to Oregon Lottery headquarters where he claimed his prize this week. Oregon Lottery’s Wilsonville Payment Center can only pay out prizes up to $50,000.

“I plan on helping my daughter out with the prize, otherwise I am going to be saving it,” he said.

This is the second large prize Fred Meyer has been responsible for this year, and officials said they think 2020 is off to a great start.

“Fred Meyer is proud to offer Oregon Lottery at our stores. We are excited to have sold a $1 million winning Mega Millions ticket at our Tualatin store,” said Jeffery Temple, Director of Corporate Affairs. “This is the second large prize we have sold this year. So far, 2020 is a good year to purchase Lottery tickets at Fred Meyer!”
