Indialantic lawyer represents latest $15 million lottery winner

Attorney Kurt D. Panouses, known as the “Lottery Lawyer CPA” in Indialantic, is representing another winner in the Florida Lottery.

The latest person claimed a $15 million top prize from the Florida 100X THE CASH scratch-off game.

“They’re all fun and exciting, and it always feels like winning myself,” said Panouses, 62, a lawyer who also happens to be a CPA and has been featured on “Good Morning America.” “This was more or less routine.”

Lottery officials said the claimant, who wished to remain anonymous and whose trust fund is named ABIDE7LIWA, chose to receive the winnings as a one-time lump-sum payment of $11,175,000.

The winning ticket was purchased at Racetrac, located at 1722 James L. Redman Parkway in Plant City. The retailer will receive a $30,000 bonus commission for selling the winning ticket.

Panouses did say the claimant does not live in Brevard County.

Panouses became well known in the lottery arena after representing Brevard’s biggest winners, David Kaltschmidt and Maureen Smith of Melbourne Beach, who won a third of the biggest prize in history, the $1.5 billion Powerball on Jan. 13, 2016.

They opted to take the winnings in one lump sum, a total of about $327.8 million.

“I realized at that moment I had a lot of experience doing this, and it was a huge opportunity, like having the chance to play in the Super Bowl,” Panouses said.

He’s been practicing law in Brevard for more than 30 years and even has a website, where many lottery winners can locate him.

“It’s like an inheritance, where your rich uncles passes away and leaves you $5 million, and it’s the same process,” Panouses said. “The difference, Florida and lot of states, require full disclosure . and, like in this case, I’ll be the manager . nothing gets out there.”

The $30 game, launched in February 2018, features eight top prizes of $15 million, the largest scratch-off top prize offered by the Florida Lottery.

Panouses said this was the eighth and final major winner in that $30 game. The odds of winning the $15 million prize is 1-in-4,050,000.

That game also offers 20 prizes of $1 million. Overall odds of winning any prize are 1-in-2.59.

Panouses’ first representation of a lottery winner came in the late 1980s on a referral, and was a couple who claimed a $7 million prize and who had to take installments over a 20-year period.

Panouses and The Panouses Law Group offer plenty of advice on lump sums and annuities, but perhaps his most important lesson: He does not suggest signing the back of the ticket because that name would then have to “claim the ticket” and be publicly exposed.
