West Virginia Lottery Celebrating 31 Years

CHARLESTON, West Virginia (January 9, 2017) — The West Virginia Lottery is celebrating its 31st anniversary having produced more than $9 Billion in proceeds for the State of West Virginia. The Lottery has exceeded the most optimistic expectations from when sales began on January 9, 1986, with a single instant ticket named West Virginia Jackpot.

The West Virginia Lottery closed fiscal year 1985-86 with estimated sales of just more than $53 million and proceeds of $20 million that went to West Virginia’s General Revenue Fund.

Today, the Lottery produces more than $1.1 Billion in sales each year from more than 40 traditional lottery games, racetrack video lottery, limited video lottery, and table games.

The Lottery also generates an estimated $520 million annually for West Virginia.

“ We are proud of the tremendous impact the West Virginia Lottery has made, and continues to make, in helping to support education, senior services and tourism in West Virginia, ” Acting Lottery Director John Myers said.

“ I don’t think the most optimistic proponents of the Lottery Act could have imagined a return of more than $9 Billion in proceeds since inception. That is an accomplishment that all of our players, retailers and employees can take great pride in .”

Today, the State Legislature uses Lottery proceeds in a myriad of ways. Lottery proceeds are used to help fund new school construction, school improvements at every level, and the PROMISE Scholarship Program.

They also help fund important senior services, ranging from nutrition to in-home care, that improve the quality of life of thousands of West Virginia seniors each year.

Lottery proceeds are also used to help the state’s tourism industry, state parks, economic development, West Virginia veterans, and many other good causes.

In addition to the more than $9 Billion in proceeds to help support education, senior services, and the state’s growing tourism industry, West Virginia Lottery players have won more than $3 Billion in instant and draw game lottery prizes (this figure does not include video lottery and table games prizes).

LOTTO24 AG Report Very Strong Fiscal Year 2016 with 399 Thousand New Customers

HAMBURG, Germany (January 10, 2017) — According to preliminary estimates, Lotto24 AG has again exceeded the guidance it already upgraded in October last year due to a further very favourable jackpot development – especially of the EuroJackpot lottery: in the fourth quarter of 2016, billings reached around EUR 59.0 million (prior year: EUR 35.3 million) and thus grew year on year by about 67%, according to preliminary estimates. With a preliminary figure of EUR 6.9 million (prior year: EUR 3.6 million), revenues even rose by around 95% in the fourth quarter of 2016. For fiscal year 2016 as a whole, billings and revenues thus grew by approximately 47% to EUR 200.5 million (prior year: EUR 136.3 million) and around 67% to EUR 22.6 million (prior year: EUR 13.5 million) respectively, according to preliminary estimates.

Due in part to the successful roll-out of lotto clubs in 2016, gross margin improved to 11.8% in the fourth quarter of 2016 (prior year: 10.1%) and thus stood at 11.3% for 2016 as a whole (prior year: 9.9%).

With a preliminary figure of 113 thousand new customers in the fourth quarter of 2016 alone (prior year: 56 thousand) – corresponding to growth of around 102% – Lotto24 once again succeeded in raising the number of new customers in fiscal year 2016 by around 10% to 399 thousand (prior year: 361 thousand), according to preliminary calculations. As of 31 December 2016, the number of registered customers thus totalled 1,282 thousand (prior year: 883 thousand).

Cost per lead (CPL) of EUR 27.13 in 2016 was well below the prior-year figure of EUR 32.99. This trend was helped by a CPL of EUR 26.85 in the fourth quarter (prior year: EUR 37.19).

Based on preliminary calculations, there was a significant improvement in EBIT to EUR -3.9 million (prior year: EUR -13.4 million) and in net profit to EUR -2.3 million (prior year: EUR -10.8 million), due in particular to the strong revenue trend and reduced marketing expenditure of EUR 10.8 million (prior year: EUR 11.9 million).

In 2017, Lotto24 AG plans to extend its market leadership as an online provider of state-licensed lotteries and continue its sustainable growth strategy. The company expects jackpot effects to be lower than in the previous year and thus anticipates a significant reduction in marketing expenditure, with much lower new customer figures and higher CPL. Lotto24 also expects to raise billings by 15% to 20% with a stable gross margin compared to the previous year. Depending on external conditions – especially the jackpot trend – and marketing investments to attract new customers, EBIT is expected to slightly exceed break-even; net profit will be clearly above the break-even point.

The Annual Report 2016 is to be published on 30 March 2017.

For First Time in Nearly Four Years, Cash 5 Jackpot Tops $1 Million

RALEIGH, North Carolina (January 12, 2017) –The Cash 5 jackpot has reached the $1 million mark for the first time in nearly four years.

If just one ticket matches all five numbers, it would place whoever bought it among the game’s biggest winners ever.

The estimated jackpot is $1,010,000. But, depending on ticket sales, the actual amount could be even larger.

The last time the jackpot surpassed $1 million, it led to the biggest single jackpot winner in the game’s history. Homer Buffaloe, a farmer from Zebulon, won $1.14 million in March 2013.

The current jackpot run began with the drawing held on New Year’s Eve. It is only the fourth time in more than 10 years that a jackpot has rolled into seven-figure territory.

The biggest Cash 5 jackpot ever was $1.35 million. It was split by three lucky tickets that matched all five numbers in May 2011.

Cash 5 jackpots start at $50,000 and grow until one or more tickets beat odds of 1 in 749,398 to match all five numbers in a drawing.

Ticket sales for games like Carolina Cash 5 make it possible for the lottery to raise more than half a billion dollars a year for education.

The man and woman, who wish to remain anonymous, purchased the winning ticket at Selbyville Goose Creek, a subsidiary of Cato Gas & Goose Creek Food Stores, located at 38452 DuPont Blvd. in Selbyville, Delaware.

The man, who has been playing the Delaware Lottery since its inception in 1975, normally plays POWERBALL® and MEGA MILLIONS® when the jackpots get large. For years, he has played the same numbers. “ I figured it only takes one ticket to win ,” said the man. “ I went to the machine and scanned my ticket, and all these numbers came up. I have never seen that many zeroes in my life! Once reality set in, my first reaction was to cry. I walked out of the store in tears and returned to my wife who was waiting for me in the car. ”

“ He came to the car and had tears on his face ,” said the woman. “ I didn’t know what to think at first, but then he said anxiously, ‘We are millionaires!’ I was so confused I didn’t believe him and thought he was joking, so I made him double check the numbers on his phone, and we got the same results. ”

The winners selected the $72.1 million cash option and told Lottery officials they already have big plans for their prize money. “ This is just such a great experience, and we don’t want to spend the money foolishly, ” said the woman.

“ I have strong feelings toward education and would want to make donations to schools or other charities in the future. We’ve also had our eyes on an RV. Since we travel a lot, it would be perfect for our family.”

In addition, the man told Lottery officials it has always been a dream of his to own a hot rod, and he may get one down the road.

This drawing represents the second-highest Delaware jackpot winner on a single ticket. The highest was in 2004, when a winner of the $214.7 million jackpot took the cash option of $116.9 million.

“ Winning is not going to change me, ” said the woman. “ I told him I don’t want us to be different because of the money. We are very blessed to win. ”

The winning numbers for the December 17 drawing were 01, 08, 16, 57 and 67. The POWERBALL® number was 09, and the Power Play number was 2x.

The winners claimed their prize (less 25 percent after federal tax) at Delaware Lottery Headquarters in Dover on Friday, January 13, 2017.
